Family Life
The Bugari’s are basically good folk with a pretty straightforward simple existence. All their children have turned out to be good people with the exception of the drama surrounding Eleese. They run a General Store in Phlan called Bugari Goods. It stocks simple gear such as rope, backpacks, water skins, etc. It provides enough money to afford them a modest lifestyle.
War of the Lake
A small skirmish broke out between the Hill Dwarves and the Lizardfolk over the ownership of a large valley. The dispute lasted 30 years and was dubbed as the “War of the Lake”. Upon turning 25, Egert was conscripted into the army. Egert fought in the war for a mere 18 months, when the dispute was settled by King Twillshen
Birth of the “No Hammer” Legend
Egert returned from the War of the Lake and took up with a group of adventurers seeking fortune in some long abandoned mines in the mountains that lay to the west. The mines had been infested by a horde of gnolls. The party had many encounters with gnolls including a few other beasts of the cavernous environment. Depending on how one might measure success, the party was a relative failure. But two things about Egert had become evident. He did not like to hurt things. In fact, towards the end, he stopped even carrying a weapon. And second, he was one helluva healer. Thus was born the legend of “No Hammer” Egert. (Folk Hero)
Story of the Damaged Eye
Truth be told, Egert lost the eye due to a disease that caused the eye to protrude. However, it wasn’t until a particularly rowdy night in an Outlander tavern that Egert actually lost the eye. Egert made the mistake of fondling the ass of a half-eleven barbarian barmaid who promptly smashed a mug into his face. The resulting injury caused permanent damage to his left eye. Egert wears a prosthetic eye to help him focus his depth perception. Like many other tall tales of the times, the story has many versions. Egert is most fond of saying…”I learned two valuable lessons that night. First, the Hook & Cork tavern serves strong Ale and second, never fondle the butt of a barbarian barmaid.”
True Passion – Brewing
Egert returned home to complete his religious studies in the church of Hanseath. (Dwarven God of Ale & Carousing) He seemed to excel at the art of brewing and the skill of healing. However, Egert figured his Adventuring Days were over due to his eye injury. Surprisingly though, many Dwarven-laden adventurering groups employed Egert’s services, even though he refused to carry a weapon. Apparently, Dwarven adventurers liked the idea of a party member who can produce ale out of the simplest of ingredients. Not a true Ale by any means, but still a reasonable facsimile. As they would say …”It’s good to have a taste of Home after a day of battle.” Of course, Egert’s proclivity towards healing was always welcome too.
In-Play Notes
Current Campaign
Egert joined the Heroes of Phlan after another character ( Ignus Lingum ) betrayed the party and went on an extended side quest. In the very first battle with the Heroes of Phlan, Egert did not deal a single point of damage but healed the party for an impressive 253 hit points. Egert traveled with the Heroes of Phlan for a half dozen sessions until Ignus returned from his extended side quest. Egert was partially retired from the official party but remains as an “interested bystander” in the campaign.
Senshi’s Taproom
Egert met Senshi on a recent adventure. A hearty Dwarf from the northern lands, Senshi was a master chef and together they began to dream of running an upscale tavern in the city of Phlan. Senshi would run the kitchen, while Egert would run the brewery. Eventually, they achieved their goal and now Senshi’s Taproom is open for business. Check out the list of available drinks

Miscellaneous Player Notes
Interestingly, the name of “Egert Bugari” first appeared in another campaign in early 2024. The campaign was brief though (3 sessions) when due to health issues, the DM ended the campaign. As a player, I held onto the concept of this character and jumped at the idea of resurrecting Egert. Thanks goes to my current DM.
